I actually waited a few weeks to review this as I wanted to get a good sample size to see how it performed and held up. I will drop my thoughts in sections below so you can quickly jump to what you want to see. For some background - We are building a homestead and I do a lot of river fishing and overall outdoor activities where this can be handy to have close. I did not get this hatchet for free and I am not compensated for this review.

First of all, it irritates me when people drop a review without using the tool. "It just arrived! 5 stars for packaging! Can't wait to try it!" Then why did you give it 5 stars without ACTUALLY using it. I can't be the only one that feels this way. OK, rant over.

Purchase: I bought this because I couldn't find the Gerber Hatchet near me. It looks similar to this and I imagine this one was sort of a copy cat remake. Needing it to finish some homesteading projects we were starting/completing, I went ahead and got this off of Amazon. The price point was close to the gerber one and after reading some qualified reviews (as I would put it) I felt like even if it fell short, I could still purpose it for something. It arrived well packaged in a box with a finishing cloth inside. The cloth is used to wipe down the blade after cleaning.

Performance: I used this tool for everything it is designed for. Pulling nails, tacking signs, driving small nails, cutting saplings, shaving wood for a fire, splitting tinder, cutting cattle rope (fixing it), trimming cut wood, and finally clearing.

The tool is well built. This surprised me as from Amazon I expected a Harbor Freight type of hatchet. Not so. The steel is heavy and robust. As stated in other comments, the heavier it is the better it is for what I use it for. It is not an ax, but the weight helps you bring home the blade with minimal energy making it efficient to use. The handle is long and has more metal bolted in for a grip. As you see with mine, I wrapped it in paracord. You will want to do this or something like it as the longer you use it, the more it hurts your hands gripping. I also paracorded the spine near the head. This was because while shaving wood, it gives me a soft piece to keep a firm grip. I want to note that it still fits in the sheath after this.

The Head is the only reason I give this 4 stars instead of 5. The blade curves back another 45 degrees at the top. I don't see the reason for this. I would have rather seen a fully curved blade with a bottle opener or gut hook at the top. Missed an opportunity there as this would've made it more functional. The large hole used to help you shave kindling is great, but if you could've made it a dual purpose hole for a 1/2" or 5/8" socket grip, that would've made it 6 freaking stars. Overall though, good for what it does, but has the potential to be great.

Use: The blade has a solid polish and still cut paper after using it for 3 weeks. I even saw my sister beating it up as she tried to take down a larger-than-should tree with the hatchet. The blade had no curves and was still sharp. While after some rough use it was not as sharp as out of the box, a quick sharpening fixed this. I would have to do this with any other blade so this didn't bother me. The hammer end is a bolt on piece that hasn't moved since I have worked the tool. It is secured in place well and if it does move, some loctite will hold it in.

The sheath is kidex with a MOLLE and belt piece on the back. I secured this to the outside of an assault pack with MOLLE and just carried it around the other times. So far the sheath has held up nicely.

Overall I would recommend this. So much in fact I am about to buy the small one without the pry tool on the end to keep in the truck. I hope this helps you make a better informed decision on adding this to your tool kit. I haven't been disappointed.

This is a solid hatchet that I was pretty excited to put in our camping bin to use both at the fire and for hammering in tent stakes. It came packaged immaculately with belt sheath and even a lens cleaning cloth (for some reason?).

Anyways, when I used this to split some typical campfire logs I finally noticed that at the rear of the hatchet blade where the hammer face is bolted - it has an edge perpendicular to the blade surface. So the blade doesn't gradually flare out at the point and it takes a great deal of effort to get the blade any deeper into the wood because of the back of the hammer part getting stuck on the surface of the wood.

While looking for a hatchet to take river camping, I came across this one that seemed to check all the boxes I was looking for: Waterproof handle, sheath with clip, hammer, and the ability to hold behind the cutting edge.

Being a tool snob though, I set my expectations low and waited for it to arrive.

It showed up in a simple box, but very nicely packaged. The Kydex sheath that it comes with the hatchet fits it PERFECTLY. The sheath also incorporates a couple of grommets and slots for securing it however you might want to. On the back of the sheath is about the coolest belt clip I've ever seen. It's hinged, locking, and adjustable. I have faith that wherever it gets put, it's going to stay.

Removing the sheath I found a cutting edge that's been ground one step below a full mirror polish-something I certainly did not expect. That was not nearly as surprising as how sharp this thing was out of the box--it easily slices paper like a kitchen knife.

I really like the milled face on the hammer side, it's similar to my framing hammer and keeps the hammer from slipping off what it's hitting. The handle has a nice feel, it's easy to hold in 3 different positions and the material has a good texture and nice machining.

The only thing I found I don't like about this is directly related to my use. With the nail puller/pry bar at the end of the handle having a sharp end, I'm terrified of dropping it and putting it through a raft. So I'll be cutting that off and grinding it smooth so I don't have to worry.

Overall I'm really happy with this hatchet and pleasantly surprised by the quality.

This is a premiere carry-along / belt tool. Hatchet, hammer, and nail puller are a nice combination. It has a good weight and feel too. I like the orange-colored handle (as opposed to other options) to make it easy to fine in the yard or the woods. I would recommend wearing gloves, as the handle is strong but not soft on the hands. It has a quick-release (of sorts) to pull it from the belt case. However, getting it back in quickly will take some practice. A nice tool.

Very nice hatchet. It has a really good heft, and size is perfect for hand (Mine is large glove size). but I think an extra large would still fit nicely. Good solid feel, full tang is a must. The Hammer head is nice with the scabbard designed to allow you to keep the blade edge covered while using hammer. Seems to have a nice edge and scabbard is a really good fit, much better than others I have gotten in the past. Just a note, the straps are synthetic/fake leather, so I can't speak to durability in weather, but seem nice enough. I wouldn't have minded if they had used nylon straps, but as it hasn't caused an issue yet I won't ding the design.

Overall, I am very happy with this hatchet I swapped out the hatchet I currently had in my emergency bag with this one.

Nice hatchet which seems to be well made. The weight is still in the range to carry it around at your belt if need be. Pretty sharp blade which hopefully remains like that for a decent usage. I wouldn't take the nail puller off but probably make myself something to cover it. Most likely I will barely use it and things can get caught up in it. Definitely great to have on any camping trip.

One of the reasons I really like this axe is that the straighter handle is good for small or larger hands, both my husband and I can use it effectively. It's heavy enough to be useful but light enough to be portable. Overall, the blade looks good and the interestingly designed blade cover has multiple ways to adjust its ability to be held through a belt or strap.

The indentations on the handle offer a solid grip even in mist or rain and the additional features of hammer or nail puller can be useful on a farm in many applications.

I needed a decent quality blade to toss into my work bucket for chores or thread onto a belt for hiking and fence inspections. This is a great addition.

Feels balanced inhand.

I purchased this product through Amazon. I was blown with package, with advertisements inside (cute paper knife with QR code) that lead me to here.

If intention is to purchase this axe as a gift, for your outdoorsy person buy with confidence.

Out of the box, it is razor sharp. I have lumberjack size hands, for that reason only will add paracord for a better grip.
It is not to heavy, but not light. Belt clip will distribute weight as you walk.
Little cleaning cloth is a nice touch.
I do not know what else to say, but waiting for a weekend to test it.

This HX OUTDOORS Multifunctional Splitting Axe is perfect for camping: Small enough to carry, totally solid (full tang), nicely balanced. It has a really nice heft and feels like it will be up to any job. The blade is very sharp, right out of the box. This hatched feels like a real tool, not like a toy!
The Kydex sheath is well done, adjustable for different belt width and hold the axe securely.

I find that tools are one of those things that are either quality, or garbage, and this one is quality. It is so well made, and has a nice heft to it, but it's not bulky. The blade is super sharp, and the hammer end and puller are heavy-duty. It is perfect for camping. I will be getting a lot of use out of it this summer.

So the steel itself is ok but not the best for holding an edge, it's a German steel and is ok for knife edge retention but not the hardest of steels. But at the same time durable as in some harder steels are more prone to chipping. The G10 handle is top notch and the sheath is decent. Although using the blunt head to pound in some tent stakes it did get in the way a bit and the snaps popped open when the stakes with resistance and required a harder hit. You won't have that issue if the cover is off but I was trying to be safe and have the blade covered will using the hammer function. But it is very solid and feels hefty

This. This is all I've wanted in a camping hatchet. Simple. Big piece of metal. Molle attachable carrying case. Its perfect.
